Darlington

Darlington is a picturesque market town located in North East England and BEST WESTERN Walworth Castle Hotel the ideal venue to visit one of the most beautiful areas of England. Conveniently situated to visit the North Yorkshire moors, York, Durham Cathedral, and Northumberland. All of which are just a short drive away.

The town centre offers a wide array of shops and boutiques including many high street names as well as privately owned shops which offer great service and stock unusual items not found on other high streets.

There are lots of street art which can entertain, like 'Life Pulse' where light columns illuminate to your heart beat, or the distinctive Market Cascade which provides a relaxing waterfall to sit by and watch the world go by. There is also the student art in the yards behind the main high row which is an outdoor gallery and provides a showcase for young talent. There is an indoor and outdoor market and monthly Farmer's and Craft Markets are now located in the heart of the town centre.

As well as the traditional heritage of Darlington, it is also very contemporary with pavement cafes and eateries.

 
 

  • Bowes Museum is located near the market town of Barnard Castle and is a beautiful 19th century building which houses significant collections of fine and decorative arts. Only a 15 minute drive from the castle, it makes a great day out.
  • South Park is a Victorian Park in Darlington in the North East of England, and was opened to the public in 1853. There are areas for walking, feeding the birds and you can enjoy the wonderful bandstand, new play areas and skateboard park and enjoy a spot of lunch in the bistro style cafe.
  • Paddock Farm Water Gardens is a selection of 9 unique gardens with themes from the Mediterranean to the Orient. Based in a water and garden centre and with a quaint tea room. 
  • Discover High Force Waterfall, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in England and only a 20 minute drive from the castle.
  • Hartlepool's Maritime Experience is a superb recreation of an 18th century seaport. A great day out for all the family and brings to life the time of Nelson, Napoleon and the Battle of Trafalgar.
  • Visit the market town of Barnard Castle which is set on a high rock overlooking the river tees or Richmond with its Georgian architecture and cobbled streets. Both of which have wonderful castles for you to visit.
  • Beamish is one of the most famous museums telling the story of North East England during the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods. Known as the living museum, you can visit the old school and shops of the period, the town, the station and the pit village. Beamish is a wonderful day out for all the family.
 
 

  • Darlington Railway Museum is a great place to explore the significance of Darlington's railway heritage 
  • National Railway Museum Shildon is based at George Stephenson's old house. This museum offers steam train rides during busy periods and is a great day out to explore the heritage of the railway.
  • Cinema at Teesside Park based near stockton at Teesside retail park, this showcase cinema shows all the recent releases and has a selection of retail outlets and food establishments.
  • Go shopping at the Metrocentre, only a 45 minute drive and it is Britain's, and indeed Europes largest indoor shopping centre.
  • Ormesby Hall is a beautiful 18th century mansion with gardens.
  • Green Howards Regimental Museum is based in Richmond and tells the history of the illustrious Green Howards Regiment.
  • Durham Cathedral is the greatest Norman building in England, and perhaps even in Europe. Voted one of Britain's most beautiful buildings, you can view inside the cathedral, the cloisters and visit the gift shop and cafe. 
  • Butterfly World in Stockton is based at Preston Park. Enter the magical world of a tropical rainforest and view the beautiful butterflies. Also at the park is a small train, a childrens play area and plenty of open space.
 
 

  • Bowling at Teesside Park, based in Stockton. Teesside park is a great retail outlet with many high street stores and eating establishments.
  • Diggerland based just outside Durham and is great fun where adults and children alike drive real diggers and so much more.
  • Archers Ice Cream Parlour only a 2 minute drive from the castle. Archers Ice Cream is a working farm which makes their own ice cream. View the cows and enjoy a delicious ice cream in their delightful cafe.
  • Ruff and Tumble Adventure World is an indoor play area for children and ideally suited for under 12's.
  • Adventure Valley is the newest family day out in the North East, packed with fun for Children and is easily accessible for the castle at only a 35 minute drive.
  • Hall Hill Farm is a great farm for all children to visit. Feed the lambs and see and stroke the animals. There is a great children's play park with picnic area.
  • Lightwater Valley is a theme park. With rides for all ages. Discount vouchers are available for guests staying at the hotel.
